UPDATED BIO (1/28/2022):  Louise is a standard Chiweenie who was found at a shelter in North Alabama after one of her owners passed away and the family surrendered her and 3 other dogs.  She is absolutely the sweetest dog ever! She loves to be around people and does well with children over 10 years old.

Louise loves to be petted and have her ears scratched.  She knows her name and will promptly come when called.  Louise is very housebroken and walks well on a leash - she will even let you know when she needs to go out!  She gets along well with other dogs and is not defensive or aggressive with dogs that she does not know when we are out for a walk.  She needs a fenced yard as she likes to run, roam, and relax in the grass.

This little one has been diagnosed with mild Cushing’s Syndrome and is currently on medication for this and has responded very well.   She is on Hill's Metabolic Diet for weight loss and along with her medication has lost almost 7 pounds.  She is so much more active every day as she continues to lose weight.  She runs all over the back yard barking at a squirrel or two from time to time.  Louise will need to continue with her diet until she reaches her healthy weight of approximately 15 pounds. Louise loves green beans as a treat and will happily eat then right from the can or cooked fresh ones.

This sweet girl is such a happy girl! She doesn’t just wag her tail; she wags her whole body!

The must haves (no exceptions, please) for Louise include:

  • A fenced yard
  • A warm lap to sit in
  • Another dog would be great, but is not a must IF you are home a lot
  • Someone who is gentle and patient to help her through her fears
  • No apartments or high-rises
  • No small children
  • Someone to help with her continued weight loss

If you are interested in Louise, please complete an application and contact her foster mom.

============== Information for All Dogs/Adopters ==============

AADR does not recommend dachshunds for families with children under 5, or families planning to have children during the dog's lifetime. Dachshunds are often not patient with little kids, and kids can accidentally hurt a dachshund’s back or get bitten.

If you have questions about this dog, please feel free to contact the foster home at the email address listed above.  They have the most up-to-date information concerning the dog and would be happy to answer any questions about the animal.

We welcome out of state and Canadian adoptions, but we will not ship any dog via cargo.  You will have to make arrangements to pick up the dog or for them to go by ground transport.  If you choose transporting by either volunteers through our organization or by paid transporter, there will be an additional $55 fee added for the required Health Certificate.

We will not adopt into CT, RI, NH, ME, or MA due to strict laws regarding importation of dogs into those states.  If you have an issue with this, you will need to take this up with your legislatures.

To understand the adoption process through AADR, please review the Adoption Information on our home page.  Transportation options are outlined on that page in Step 3.

Please don't let the distance stand in your way of finding your newest best friend. We have volunteers that will help your "new friend" get up and down the East Coast and Midwest. We just can't get them from one coast to the other. Please look for dogs on your coast.
