BIO:  Apollo came from Western Kentucky when he was locked in a home for a month with 16 cats and open bags for dog and cat food left on the floor. He was taken to the local shelter and the cats went to rescue in Illinois. He didn’t come with a name so we have given him this one.

The must haves (no exceptions, please) for adorable little Apollo include:

  • A fenced yard
  • No apartments or high-rises
  • Someone who is home a lot to help him with a potty schedule
  • Another small young dog to continue helping him with socialization

Apollo is a wonderful little guy but like all of us, there are things that he needs for optimal health and happiness in a home. There are many things that are considered in matching a pup and a potential adopter, the items listed here are the minimum requirements for someone to be considered for approval.  If you are able to meet all these requirements , and you think Apollo is the one for you, please apply.

Apollo is the kind of dog who follows you around like you are the king/queen of the universe. He always wants to be with you when you are home, however, if you are working from home, he is happy to lay quietly at your feet or sit on the back of your recliner. He has amazing canine and people skills! He gets along marvelously with the 5 dogs in his foster home and with any person who visits the house.

Although Apollo was pulled from a neglectful situation, he doesn't act like he was abused. He approaches everyone with a full, happy heart. He is very smart and will be easy to train. He will come on command to people he loves.

Apollo needs at least one other young dog in the household. He wants to play constantly and currently keeps 3 dogs very busy multiple times a day. He also likes cats.

Apollo expects to sleep in the big bed. If your family has an early riser, he happily gets up with the early riser, eats breakfast, and then will go back to bed with the person who is still in bed.

He is an 8.2-pound bundle of love, energy, and sweetness! If you think you can be the family he needs and deserves, and if you have another young dog for his companion, consider completing an application.

We expect he’ll not get much over 10 pounds and he really does have the cutest face! We just want him to go to a home to help him be the best pet he can be!

============== Information for All Dogs/Adopters ==============

AADR does not recommend dachshunds for families with children under 5, or families planning to have children during the dog's lifetime. Dachshunds are often not patient with little kids, and kids can accidentally hurt a dachshunds back or get bitten.

If you have questions about this dog, please feel free to contact the foster home at the email address listed above.  They have the most up-to-date information concerning the dog and would be happy to answer any questions about the animal.

We welcome out of state and Canadian adoptions, but we will not ship any dog via cargo.  You will have to make arrangements to pick up the dog or for them to go by ground transport.  If you choose transporting by either volunteers through our organization or by paid transporter, there will be an additional $55 fee added for the required Health Certificate.

We will not adopt into CT, RI, NH, ME, or MA due to strict laws regarding importation of dogs into those states.  If you have an issue with this, you will need to take this up with your legislatures.

To understand the adoption process through AADR, please review the Adoption Information on our home page.  Transportation options are outlined on that page in Step 3.

Please don't let the distance stand in your way of finding your newest best friend. We have volunteers that will help your "new friend" get up and down the East Coast and MidWest. We just can't get them from one Coast to the other. Please look for dogs on your coast.
